East African Community LLM & PhD Scholarships

 East African Community LLM & PhD Scholarships: Applications for admission and scholarships are invited from candidates in member states of the East African Community, who wish to receive a scholarship and to take part in the postgraduate study programme in law (LLM or PhD) offered by the Tanzanian-German Centre for Postgraduate Studies in Law at the University of Dar es Salaam school of Law (Formerly Faculty of Law) in cooperation with the University of Bayreuth (TGCL).

The purpose of the programme is to train future leaders in East Africa. University of Bayreuth (TGCL) grants ten LLM scholarships and five PhD scholarships each year.
Scholarships are granted for one year in the case of LLM students and three years in the case of PhD students.
Scholarship Requirements and Qualifications:
The requirements for admission to the LLM and PhD programmes are those applicable at the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law (Formerly Faculty of Law).
For the LLM programme:

  • A Bachelor's degree in law (LLB) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent from a recognized institution of higher legal education.


  • For the PhD programme:


  • An excellent LLM degree from a recognized institution. 

  • Scholarships start from 1st October each year.

    Call for Papers: A38 Journal of International Law

     The A38 Journal of International Law (ISSN pending) is a quarterly academic publication, seeking to provide a forum for the publication of articles in the field of International Law.
    The Journal is currently soliciting submissions for Volume I, Issue 1 which would be published in April 2012. It welcomes submissions from academicians, practitioners, students, researchers and experts from within the legal community.
    Submissions under the following categories are welcomed:
    • Articles (between 6000-10000 words inclusive of footnotes)
    • Short Notes (3000-6000 words inclusive of footnotes)
    • Book Reviews (1000-2000 words inclusive of footnotes)
    • Commentaries (3000-5000 words inclusive of footnotes)

    All submissions are expected to be in conformity with the following guidelines:
    · Submissions are to be made only in electronic form, and are to be sent in to submissions@athirtyeight.com.
    ·     All submissions for the current issue must reach us either on or before March 1st, 2012.
    ·    Each Article is expected to be accompanied by an abstract of not more than 300 words. No abstract is required for Short Notes, Book Reviews or Commentaries. 
    ·    For Book Reviews, please mention all details of the subject of the review clearly. You will need to specifically mention the name of the book itself, name of the author, name of the publisher and edition numbers.         
    ·   Please ensure that Author details are included on the first page of the manuscript. The details of the author’s qualifications, institutional affiliation and postal address must be sent in as part of the manuscript on the first page.   
    ·    By submitting the article, the author is presumed to undertake a declaration to the effect that the article has not been published, submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere.

    PhD Scholarships, Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

     The Faculty of Law has a number of vacant PhD scholarships available from September 2012.
    All research projects within the discipline of Legal Science are considered. However, the faculty will give priority to applications within the research areas of the Faculty´s nine research centres.     Applicants are allowed to apply for project topic within other areas of Legal Science than offered by research centres. If you wish to prepare and apply for a project topic, which is not offered please click on the heading ” Other Porjects”.
    The purpose of the Faculty´s PhD Programme is both to prepare the student for a continuing career in legal research and teaching and to educate highly qualified labour relevant to both the public and private sectors. The degree assures research qualifications at an international level.
    Qualifications
    • Applicants must have an educational background that corresponds to the Danish LL.M.-degree or equivalent qualifications.
    • Students who are expecting to graduate this term and are awaiting the evaluation of their dissertation may apply.
    • Applicants must as far as possible document an aptitude for scientific work, for instance through a high assessment of their dissertations and must also be able to undertake the highly demanding task of independently writing a PhD dissertation.
    During the 3-year PhD Programme you are required to
    • Participate in research environments outside the Faculty of Law – usually through study periods abroad. Take part in international conferences, courses and meetings.
    • Complete the Faculty´s PhD study Programme – some travelling including to international conferences, courses, and meetings should be expected.
    • Teach – typically bachelor or master courses.
    • Undertake independent research (making of PHD thesis) under supervision.

    Application procedure
    To apply, click on the Centre you are interested in (or click on the heading “Another Projects” if you wish to apply for this) and you are right on the application form you have to fill in. Be prepared and have the below-mentioned documents ready to upload before you submit:
    1. A motivated application must specify the scientific reasons in favour for accepting this particular research programme at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen
    2. A Curriculum Vitae
    3. Diploma of your qualifying degree and marking transcripts (translated into English, Danish, Swedish or Norwegian)
    4. A description of the research proposal (5 to max 10 pages)
    5. Time table
    If you have prepared your own individual project you are still welcome to apply, but must use the link specified for “Other Projects”.
    All interested parties, regardless of personal background, are encouraged to apply. Foreign applicants must be able to present and document qualifications equivalent to a Danish Master degree before enrolment. Applicants supported by external finances must be able to document such.
    Terms of employment
    Employment will take place according to the agreement between The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the Ministry of Finance about the salary of PhD Students. Furthermore, there will be a personal pension bonus corresponding to the difference between the seniority increment received as a principal according to the new wage system for academics on a group contract basis and the pay of a PhD student. Normally, the scholarship cannot be extended.

    The Faculty of Law is one of eight faculties at the University of Copenhagen. The Faculty carries out research, education and knowledge dissemination within the area of law. The research is partly organised in research centres and groups. The Faculty employs about 75 full time researchers and app. 43 PhD scholars as well as app. 70 administrative staff members.     International PhD Fellowships, Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences, Germany

    The Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) invites applications to its Ph.D. program. The program will commence on September 1st, 2012.
    Successful applicants for the Ph.D. and Post-doc fellowships will pursue a topic in one of BIGSSS’ five Thematic Fields:
    • Global Integration
    • Integration and Diversity in the New Europe
    • Social Integration and the Welfare State
    • Attitude Formation, Value Change and Intercultural Communication
    • Life-Course and Lifespan Dynamics
    All fellows are expected to choose Bremen as their place of residence.
    Financial Support:
    BIGSSS offers 15 Ph.D. stipends of 1250 Euros/month for 36 months, contingent on successful completion of each year. To support its Ph.D. fellows in achieving early scientific independence, it also provides funds for conducting, presenting and publishing research. There is no separate funding application, because all admitted applicants receive a stipend.
    Admission Requirements:
    • An excellent MA degree (or national equivalents like the German “Diplom” or “Magister”) in a discipline pertinent to at least one of BIGSSS’ five Thematic fields (see above), i.e. in Political Science (including related degree programs in European Studies or International Relations), Sociology, Psychology, Law, Economics or Mass Communication. The degree must be completed by the end of July of the year of application, which means you may apply before having finished your MA degree.
    • English proficiency as described in the application materials section below.
    • Additionally BIGSSS offers 2 Preparatory Fellowships to particularly talented BA Graduates.
