Climate Change Conference Fellowships for Journalists

The Fellowships are open predominantly to journalists from developing countries, but journalists from the US and Russia are also welcome to apply.
Formed in 2007 by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), Panos London and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the CCMP has brought developing country journalists to the annual UN climate summits for the past five years.
This has enabled them to cover the summit for their home media organizations, work with experienced and knowledgeable journalists from around the world, and gain a multifaceted understanding of climate change's global impact.
Numerous regional organizations also play a supporting role in the partnership. As part of the fellowships, the CCMP will cover travel, lodging and daily subsistence expenses, arrange press accreditation at COP18, and provide other support services.
The Fellows will benefit from a series of specially designed activities, including an orientation session, breakfast briefings, a field trip and a media clinic.

Eligiblity :
  • A journalist from the developing world, USA or Russia
  • Able to illustrate passion and commitment to reporting on climate change issues
  • Able to travel to Doha, Qatar to arrive no later than 29th November 2012 and leave no later than 8thDecember 2012
  • Have proven support from an editor, producer or supervisor

The CCMP fully respects the editorial independence of all journalists.
Throughout the conference, Fellows are free to report as they see fit.
As well as the requirements above we ask that journalists agree to provide copies or summaries of all the stories they file during COP18 for posting on our websites and that they show collegial attitude towards other Fellows.
One of the main benefits of this program will be the opportunity for Fellows to exchange views and information with their journalistic peers from around the world.
Criteria for evaluating applicants will include the prospective Fellow's demonstrated interest in climate change issues; their audience; and the ability of the Fellowship to provide an opportunity for those journalists who might not otherwise have a chance to cover such events.
Fellows represent a diverse range of experience and regions, though a primary goal of this program is to reach audiences – particularly marginalized communities –who are currently underserved when it when it comes to climate information.
At the moment, the CCMP has funding to bring a small number of Fellows, but is actively working to increase support in order to increase those numbers. In addition to selecting the initial slate of Fellows, targeted to be announced in September a waitlist will also be created to select additional journalists if more funding becomes available.

British Academy, International Partnership and Mobility Scheme

Proposals are invited for the first round of International Partnership and Mobility awards.

    Aim of the award

The International Partnership and Mobility Scheme aims to support the development of partnerships between the UK and other areas of the world where research excellence would be strengthened by new, innovative initiatives and links.
In this round the Scheme is open to three-year and one-year partnerships between UK scholars and scholars in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia.
Awards cover any branch of the humanities or social sciences and are intended to focus on collaborative research on a specific theme of mutual interest, rather than purely on establishing networks.
The Scheme intends to strengthen research capacity/capability, with all partners gaining from the collaboration, and to initiate the development of long-term, vigorous links between the UK and overseas scholars whilst also encouraging an intra-regional exchange of expertise and knowledge sharing.
UK-Taiwan One-Year Partnerships: Under the umbrella of the International Partnership and Mobility Scheme, one-year partnerships between UK scholars and scholars in Taiwan will be co-funded by the British Academy and the National Science Council of Taiwan.

    Scope of the award

Awards are for research partnerships between scholars in the UK and scholars in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East, South Asia, or East Asia. Overseas scholars are encouraged to initiate links with UK partner institutions and to play a significant role in developing proposals.
One-year awards may be viewed as pump priming grants suited to initiate new collaborative partnerships.  Three-year awards will develop research further, and involve a more extensive programme of collaboration and exchange.
Partnerships might include a range of related activities, and mobility (in the form of visits in both directions, exchanges, etc.) should form an integral part of proposals. Workshops and seminars should form an integral part of the programme. The main purpose of the funding is to cover travel and maintenance costs, although costs related to other eligible activities will be considered. Partnerships including a training element and involving scholars in the early stages in their career will be looked on favourably.

    Eligibility

Applicants must be of postdoctoral or equivalent status. Research must be in the field of the humanities or social sciences.
Both a principal applicant and co-applicant are required for this scheme. The principal applicant must be ‘ordinarily resident’ in the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands and must be able to demonstrate that they will be based at their present employing research-active institution in the UK for the duration of the award. The co-applicant must be an academic based in a research-active institution in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East, South Asia, or East Asia and must also be able to demonstrate that they will be based at their present employing institution for the duration of the award.

    Level of Grant

Grants are offered up to a maximum of £10,000 per year for a period of one year or three years. Successful awards must start on or after 1 September 2012 and no later than 31 March 2013.

    Closing Date

The closing date for applications is 8 February 2012. Decisions will be announced in late July 2012. Successful awards must start on or after 1 September 2012 and no later than 31 March 2013.
Applications must be submitted via e-GAP2, the Academy's electronic grant application system.
Applicants are asked to read the Scheme Notes (PDF file - 362 KB) before beginning an application.
